ANTICIPATION

Standard

Dear Reader,

According to dicionary.com, anticipation is the act of anticipating, the expectation or hope, the intuition, foreknowledge or prescience about something. In psychology, anticpation is an act of being enthusiastic, it is an emotion involving pleasure and sometimes anxiety in considering some longed – for – good event or an irritation at having to wait.

In the midst of my write up, I would be sharing with you few products that seem to be very much anticipated by a substantial amount of people in my own opinion.

Image(the next generation ipad 2048 by 1536 pixel display offering four times the resolution of Ipad 2’s 1024 by 768 pixel screen)

Anticipation is a very powerful tool in marketing and the act of building up anticipation in your prospective cusomers should be adopted into the marketing process of any successful buisness. In establishing and building anticipaion, advertisments are used to portray the products that are yet to be out in sales to give the prospective cusomers awareness about the product.

Image(smart tv by apple, that can share user contents amongst multiple devices including tvs, tablets smartphones and game console)

In my opinion, anticpation would lead to more sales than otherwise. This is because when people become anticpated about a product, they are anxious and excited about it, they tell friends about it, talk about it all the time and make plans of getting it. This leads to more people knowing about the product and anxious about the product they believe is a must have, and consquently more people who are willing to buy especially if its affordable

The same way anticipation can lead to enormous sales, similarly it can be damaging to a brand name in siuations where the product that has been waited for doesnt meet up to the expectations of the customers. This may diminish their trust for that brand and is products.

Therefore, in building anticipation one must meet up to time (If the product launches later that it was promised, the anticipation may turn to frustration and you wont get the benefits you wanted from the build up). Also as it has always been said quality is better that quantity, give a good quality product to satisfy your customer long awaited desire and you would not have just good sales but also a good brand name known for good quality products.

DARE to be DIFFERENT

Standard

Image

Hello Reader,

Patti Wilson said “ FOLLOWING THE HERD IS A SURE WAY TO MEDIOCRITY “. Being a mediocre means being someone who lacks exceptional abilities or exceptional quality. Everyone strives to be the best and being a mediocre is definetely a wrong path way to that achievement.

It is important to bear in mind that to stay the best you must first be the best, and to be the best you should dare to be different. Being different is synonymous with being unique, you are a special kind, none is like you, etc.

Image

This concept of being different or unique towards being the best amongst the rest should be applied to the marketing and branding of products and most definetely in their advertisments too. In buisness, I believe there should always be risk taking. For example, a new watch model shouldnt just be a regular watch that just tells the time, *to the watch manufacturers* go above and beyond, make watch models that no one has seen before but also that satisfies the needs of your consumers, that makes thing easier, explore technology. *to the marketers* develop new ideas that shifts from the norm and dazzle the world with fresh unique ideas.

I believe that being different or unique is the way forward in this fast growing technological world. There are better oppurtunities and the means also to make a difference, you dont want to be playing safe and resting on your oars when your competitors are taking advantage of great oppurtunities and putting it to their best use.

Human beings get bored with regular, give them variety, and not just in your marketing campaigns but also in the products themselves. Thats a start towards greatness, so make it happen. DARE TO BE DIFFERENT

The Placebo effect

Standard

Hello Reader,

There is a popular saying that what you dont know wont hurt you. The placebo effect in medicine is simply the resultant effect of administering inactive substances such as drugs, diet, etc to see the true reaction of the participant to the substances towards their recovery (NOTE: The participants dont know the substances are inactive). In psychological experiments, it has been oserved that the placebo effect shows that to be convinced of something relative to our body leads to a specific response by the nervous system that, in some cases, produces precisely the intended effect.

Nevertheless, placebo effect occurs in other aspects aside Medicine and Psychological experiments. The placebo effect can also be associated with advertisments and branding. The aim of advertisments and brand tags or logos are to attract (YOU) the potential consumers to the product being advertised giving you an impression that the product is the best choice, thereby convincing you to buy the product. The effect of this advertisement on you is the believe that the product would give you the expected best result and also experiencing that feeling of satisfaction even after the purchase. Basically, it is what you believe would happen that happens more. This can be regarded as the placebo effect in advertising, and can be established through the use of pictures or video advertisement  with enhanced effect which helps to potrays a very good impression to the viewers thereby convincing them to buy.

This is an anti – aging cream picture advert for women. The advert gives the impression that the user of this product would have a younger looking skin, although this may not neccesarily happen as such. If the viewer of this advert believes that she would have a younger looking skin when she uses this product she is convinced to buy it. When she starts using the product, she would initialy  feel like her skin is  looking  young and beautiful. This is called selective attention (i.e the user believes the cream is working for her) and this happens even in cases where the cream did’nt even work at all. The feeling of satisfaction from the cream would only stop if the product begins to give obvious negative results.

Likewise in the case of this detergent advert. This advert gives the impression that stains go the first time the detergent is used to wash your clothes. This is convincing enough to make a purchase because the ultimate result we want from a detergent is to remove stains.  When you buy this detergent you believe that it wou remove all the stains from your clothe and after you use it, the result is visibly true to the advert. It is what you believe would happen that would happen more.

When what you believe from an advert seems to be working perfectly for you, that means the placebo effect has worked on you.

NOTE: The placebo effect doesnt neccesarily mean that the products advertised are not good or effective. It only helps give a very good impression of the product, sometimes a better impression of the product that would leave a lasting effect on the buyer which may sometimes translate to brand loyalty. (Brand loyalty can be described as when customers become commited to your brand because they trust the brand and believe it works for them so they repeat purchase over time).

YOU are what you BUY

Standard

Hello Reader,

The idea of your self concept being a huge part of your purchase decision is absolutely true without a doubt. Self concept is basically how we see ourselves and how we think other people see us, and as individuals we often try to create a picture of ourselves that is acceptable to our reference groups and makes us feel better about ourselves.

The psychology of buying is simple. When it comes to buying of cars, take for instance you choose to buy a Mercedes Benz car. You may convince yourself that the purchase is just because you love the car or because it has great engine power but in the reality of things it is because of how you believe you would feel when you actually own the car; the sense of power, pride, luxury and envy from others. Another instance may be when you want to buy a clothing item or clothing accessory, you buy them because you believe they make you look attractive, beautiful, expensive, classy,  fashionable, etc  as the case may be.

These instances may not neccesarily apply to you in its actual sense, but the general idea behind it is that when you make a purchase you more often than not attribute it to yourself and how it makes you feel and this action is done consciously or unconsciousy.

In my opinion she considers buying this dress because she believes she looks beautiful in it.

It is important that marketers create some form of desire that their potential customers can relate to. Create an avenue that makes your customers feel their purchase is worth it and at the same time makes them feel good about themselves, because no one really wants to make a purchase that makes them feel inferior or not good enough. People want products that make them feel great about themselves so its worth the cost of the purchase.

My ideas may not be perfect but your opinions would always count and ideas duly noted. These are thoughts from ME to YOU.

Have a wonderful day.

COLOURS that pop

Standard

ImageHello Reader,

Colours are very meaningful tools for sighted people. they can be used to send positive or negative messages, encourage sales and attract people to adverts. Most importantly, colours that pop make a statement

Think about it, if you want to draw attention, you may choose the colour red. if you are trying to portray cleaningness, you choose white. if you are being environmental friendly, you go with green. yellow is the ultimate colour to depict optimism and cheerfulness.

In marketing products to prospective buyers, colourful ads go a long way in establishing an initial attraction. This depends on the kind of product you are selling and the brand image of the product being potrayed

Colours have and will continually have an effect on the minds of people. This is because it is inherent in an individuals nature to be attracted to beautiful things.

I think the use of colours cannot be overemphasised. Colours that pop make a statement and that statement is what a good advert needs to attract people to buy a product.

CHECK THIS OUT

ImageDo you understand what I mean? ATTRACTIVE!! We all love coke, so how about another product

ImageThis is attractive, makes you want to know the product that is being sold. Does’nt it?

The psychology of colur is the study of colour as a determinant of human behaviour. Therefore one can say with the use of the right colours, peoples behaviours can be influenced towards the purchase of their products as the case may be

Inception

Standard

hello reader,

This is a very new path for me, some people who know me well may wonder what might have gotten into me to start a blog. My answer to that is, why have so much thoughts pent up begging to be free and still hold back? I have a lot of thoughts concerning my career path and i want to share them with you. I just finished my undergraduate studies a couple of months ago, so technically im a psychologist now getting ready for a great future ahead.

In my 4 years of undergraduate studies in psychology i realised my passion for psychology was more inclined to its application to the world of Marketing, Advertising and Branding, so i started reading up books on marketing, advertising and branding to have a better idea as to what was going on in my mind.

I grew so much in love with this idea, that in my final year i was bent on writing a thesis in that regard and i did.*big smile*.for better emphasis, my thesis topic was psychosocial factors as predictors of car brand preference and purchase decision.

People more often than not have this stereotypical idea that if you are a psychologist then you are automatically supposed to know whats going on in their minds, some would even ask;” so youre a psychologist now, tell me what im thinking. you people can read minds now”. let it be known to you now. We dont read minds, we may observe you and make accurate inferences but we dont read your mind!!!

My thoughts on applying psychological principles to marketing, advertising and branding is explicate in the sentences “what motivates an individual to buy a certain product, what are those important cues in adverts and brandworks that attracts an individual to buy a certain product” the knowledge of this begins from the knowledge of your consumer(i.e. knowing your consumer) by a psychologist who has been trained and is skilled in the knowledge of how people behave, think, feel, reason and also how they are influenced by their environment in relation to their purchase of goods and services.

My ideas may not be perfect but your opinions would always count and ideas duly noted. These are thoughts from ME to YOU.

Have a wonderful day.
